Google and the Deep Web

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

An article in the New York Times has commented on how Google has recently indexed its one trillionth web address but still has issues that it can’t yet grasp. Namely the Deep Web.

The NY Times reports that the major search engines still have trouble providing satisfying answers to exact questions that may be posed by searchers. When posting a question such as “the best fare from New York to London next Thursday?” traditional search engines find it hard to offer a suitable answer.   (more…)

Mobile Websites Still Unusable

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

The developments of the mobile web are akin to those of the Desktop Web back in 1998 according to research conducted by Jakob Nielson in his alert box web page at www.useit.com.

Testing mobile websites through various means he found that they failed on most of the tests he worked on. For starters the sites tested were found to have very large pages with large images or long pages that were impossible to see clearly on the smaller screens of mobiles.  (more…)

Google Japan Penalised

Monday, February 16th, 2009

It’s a welcome sight to see Google upholding the “do as I say and not as I do” philosophy of search engine optimisation [SEO] best practices. After news of Google Japan being caught paying for blogger reviews in an attempt to improve their PageRank position they announced that Google.co.jp PageRank was now ~5 instead of ~9. (more…)

Google leading the way again

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Whilst probably not a surprise to anyone that uses internet search the figures just released by Neilson online show that Google has once again pulled further away from its competitors.

Of the 9 million plus searches that took place in January 2009 in the United States nearly 6 million of them happened on Google, this is more than double those with Yahoo and MSN Live Search combined who were second and third respectively. Following a long way behind those two was AOL Search, Ask.com and My Web Search. (more…)

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

If it could happen to the Romans and the British then I suppose there is no reason why the Google internet empire shouldn’t fall one day. But before you get too excited this was a thought put forward by the research company Forrester Research after a recent survey on web users search habits and not an actual possibility. Not any time soon anyway.  (more…)
