TMP Directional Marketing have conducted a survey that for the first time has revealed that more searches for local businesses were now made online than through the Yellow Pages in the US.
Search engines now account for 31% of the market with the Yellow Pages now equating for 30% and the rest being taken by online Yellow Page-type sites and local search sites.
When thinking about your marketing review for the future this is further evidence that companies should be looking towards search engine optimisation even if it means the big yellow book will just end up propping the door open.

An article in the New York Times has commented on how Googlei has recently indexed its one trillionth web address but still has issues that it can’t yet grasp. Namely the Deep Web.
The NY Times reports that the major search engines still have trouble providing satisfying answers to exact questions that may be posed by searchers. When posting a question such as “the best fare from New York to London next Thursday?” traditional search engines find it hard to offer a suitable answer.

The developments of the mobile web are akin to those of the Desktop Web back in 1998 according to research conducted by Jakob Nielson in his alert box web page at www.useit.com.
Testing mobile websites through various means he found that they failed on most of the tests he worked on. For starters the sites tested were found to have very large pages with large images or long pages that were impossible to see clearly on the smaller screens of mobiles.

It’s a welcome sight to see Googlei upholding the “do as I say and not as I do” philosophy of search engine optimisation [SEOi] best practices. After news of Google Japan being caught paying for blogger reviews in an attempt to improve their PageRank position they announced that Google.co.jp PageRank was now ~5 instead of ~9.
It is hard to miss the irony of the situation that an arm of Google has broken the rules that the main body has set. The news could be construed as interesting as it is in country where Google is in an unfamiliar position of being number two in the search engine rankings. They currently rank second to Yahoo Japan who have a market share of 51.2% up to September last...
