The World of Twitter

Monday, April 27th, 2009

The world is going Twitter crazy right now. From A-list celebrities twittering away daily to sports stars getting fined by their team for twittering during half time team talks, Twitter is everywhere.

Both Microsoft and Google have been linked with potential buyouts of Twitter and it is even now dabbling in becoming a fully fledged search engine of sorts. At the recent SMX conference in Sydney Twitter expert, Darren Rowse explained some of the benefits of using Twitter not only for personal use but for business as well. (more…)

Yahoo CEO Looks Forward

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz has come out all guns blazing in her thoughts about the future of Yahoo after the first quarter financial results for 2009 were released. Included in these were some restructuring plans and areas where Yahoo aims to improve upon for the future.

The first quarter results have seen Yahoo’s revenue drop 14% from $1.35 billion to $1.15 billion from the same time last year. Will shareholders be patient enough to wait for a restructuring of the company to take effect? (more…)

First Ever Records Drop for Google

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

This past week Google announced its first quarter-on-quarter losses as the worldwide recession finally hit the search engine giants. This loss is the first of any kind for the company, but still shows an increase from the same quarter in 2008.

It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to hear of the loss as trends change all the time, and Google has done well to ride the recession so well up to this point. Media Weekly reported that some of the hardest losses for Google have been here in the UK.  (more…)

Welcome Back Jeeves

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

It may only be the fourth most popular search engine, but Ask.com’s butler symbol, Jeeves, has remained one of the more iconic symbols in the search in recent years, so much so that the people at Ask have decided to bring the butler back to its UK based searches after a three year hiatus. (more…)

Courting Twitter

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Microsoft and Google are preparing to do battle again in an effort to strike a deal with Twitter involving their search service.  The All Things Digital website reported that the two major companies are vying with each other for control of what those in the know are calling “the next great battlefield in search”.

This is due to the real time search nature of the “tweets” posted by Twitter users. There is also the opportunity of selling related ads on the Twitter site that is of interest to both Google and Microsoft.  (more…)

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Google Taking Search Local

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Google has unveiled its new service to aid searchers who are looking for specific requests in their local area. If you type in the word restaurant or pub then Google will automatically try to predict where you live and give you the best results for your area.

This service was brought about by the fact that the most people searching were not inserting the location when posting a search query, just inserting “restaurant” and not “restaurants in London” for example (more…)

Microsoft to throw 100 Million dollars at search market

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Not seeming to be making any headway in the search market business, Microsoft has decided that is enough is enough, and is going to throw their chequebook at the problem.

Looking at possibly changing the branding of its search and the way in which the search process is delivered, Microsoft is set to invest between $80-$100 million worth of marketing to get the results they desire. (more…)
