Wolfram Alpha – The Early Days

After much fanfare the search engine Wolfram Alpha went live this month and for those that have had a look it may or may not be what they were expecting.

Having read the many stories about how it was going to be a possible Google killer, I was keen to have a look at what it had to offer. Preceding its release there was a lot of talk about the previous work of Wolfram Alpha’s creator Steven Wolfram, the computational software Mathematica and how it would work within the search engine. Google to take on the real time search challenge

After flirting with the possibility of buying Twitter due to their ability to offer real time search, Google is now thinking long and hard about their own ability to provide the same service.

Google co-founder Larry Page spoke recently about how Twitter has proved that real time search is essential and it is something that he warned his team about long ago. Page says he was laughed at then but his words now seem prophetic. (more…)

Microsoft Keeps Everyone Guessing With Name Change

With the arrival of Microsoft’s new search engine now imminent it seems as though it is anyone’s guess what the service will be called.

The latest rumours coming out of Microsoft have the word “Bing” bounding around as the potential new name. This follows on from the other possible contenders that have been thrown about, the much vaunted Kumo, Hook and Sift.   (more…)

If you’re looking to start up a new website to revamp your company’s image there are several factors that you should consider from the outset.

Facebook is the number one UK website

A report from Neilson Online says that out of all the website traffic in the UK nearly 50% of it is divided between only ten sites.

The major winner in all this was Facebook where it is said that one in every eight minutes online is spent on the social network site. There was better news for Microsoft’s though as their MSN/ Windows Live site came in number two and ahead of Google.  (more…)

Google Adverts on Your Television

Going against everything they have preached in the past, Google is placing adverts on television for the first time to promote one of its services.

The new Google Chrome internet browser that was launched last year has seen Google place ads across American television channels recently. In direct competition with Internet Explorer and Firefox, Chrome hasn’t yet had the success Google was hoping for. (more…)

Yahoo and Microsoft Merger Back on

Chinese Search Engine Results

The Chinese search engine Baidu is expected to increase its lead over Google within China in the upcoming months according to the China Daily newspaper. Apple in Takeover Talks of Twitter

Another day and another takeover bid for Twitter emerges, this time a $700million approach by Apple.

Following on from the Facebook bid and the reported interest of Google and Microsoft, Apple are reported to be in late stage negotiations by several industry bloggers who believe that they they hope to announce a deal in the next month or so. (more…)

Google Beaten to the Line

It seems as though Google can be beaten in search related queries after all.

Search Engine Land did some playing around with the search engines by inputting “Who won the Kentucky Derby?”, and they discovered that LiveSearch and Ask.com were the fastest to provide the news ahead of Google. (more…)
