Following on from last weeks popular piece highlighting the numbers behind Facebook's rise to prominence/dominance, I returned in earnest to my desk to look at its neighbours/competitors 'numbers'; in this instance, Twitteri! Expect to find a number of interesting usage reports and statistics (though considerably more humble than Facebook's!) and please, once again enjoy and comment with any reactions and thoughts. Twitter was launched 15th July, 2006 175 employees Jack Dorsey, Chairman of the service envisioned it as an SMS-based social network, hence the 140 character limit. "just setting up my twttr." The first ever tweet. Twitter.com is the 7th most visited site in the US....

Some of the statistics divulged by Googlei last week surrounding the release of Instant Search really helped to put the system into context. Usage reports and stats can be equally mind numbing as they can be shocking and exciting so I set off to find a barrel load of usage statistics that would really slam home the importance and size of the behemoth that is, Facebook! Enjoy and please comment with your reactions and thoughts. Facebook went live on February 4th 2004. Facebook was originally named Facemash but was quickly shut down due to privacy concerns. Here at White Hat Mediai we're big fans of innovation and hard work so when young computer science student Feross Aboukhadijeh built his own app - YouTube Instant in the wake of Googlei's launch we thought it deserved a mention. Reacting so quickly was a very good effort and has paid off, almost literally. As you'd expect Feross's application is much like Google's new Instant feature which proposes different suggestions while you type in the search box. Feross's YouTube Instant predicts what you might be searching for and offers the most popular and/or most recent videos related to those keywords. Over the weekend YouTube Instant was an… instant blogosphere hit and soon took on a viral...

Following from my last post on the need to shift focus from simply using social media to analysing how you use social media and whether its working for you, I thought I'd summarise some of the top tools available, both for free and paid for services, and what size and nature of company these tools are best suited to. Below are 5 major services, this is by no means an exhaustive list. Hoot Suite – Multiple views and the tabbed layout makes navigation easy plus the general design is very user friendly. There are also options for auto tweeting and scheduling your tweets to post in the future. You can add accounts from your Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare profiles as well as Wordpressi and...

Googlei this week released its new search service, Google Instant Search. It displays live search results as you type by providing results even before you have hit the 'return' key. Google claims users will save two to five seconds per search and that it will save 11 hours of search every second! Are we really that impatient to wait a matter of seconds for our search results? What’s feeding our need for speed search results and why does Google feel that they need to answer our questions before we have even asked them? Will this deliver better search results? The flow of information on the web has accelerated fourfold over recent years. To Internet users, this has been most evident in the '...
