Berners-Lee, Tim

One of the greatest living Englishmen, Tim Berners-Lee is the man that invented the world wide web (slightly different from the internet). With nearly every home in the UK now having access to the internet it has become one of the most influential inventions in modern times.

Whilst the internet was born some years before it was Berners-Lee who turned the collection of academic and military computers into an international network whilst working in Switzerland. Like any dedicated “techie” some say his greatest gift was making it all available to everyone for free. Now working for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT], he also oversees the World Wide Web Consortium.

Bing

The new search engine from Microsoft advertised as a ‘decision engine’.

Black Hat Search Engine Optimisation

Processes of unethical search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques which should not be used in the practice of SEO for your website.

Terms such as cloaking, doorway pages and invisible texts are often used when describing this process. All these practices of misrepresenting content can be subject to being penalised by search engines.

Black Hat techniques can give you instant success but in the long run they will create a poor user experience, and you risk the worst fate of all, the Google death penalty meaning your site is de-listed.

Blogs

Taken as a fusion of the phrase web logs, a blog is a self published, managed or maintained online journal. A blog can be an opinion piece on a particular subject or a running diary of day to day living.

A blog relies as much on its feedback as its content and can be an excellent tool in the process of organic Search Engine Optimisation. Typically a blog will contain some text, images and maybe links to certain sites.

A good blog needs to be updated regularly and the more personal the better. Blogs are increasingly becoming a fundamental part of most websites today.

Bot

A Bot is a web harvesting tool that collects all the data on the internet - the more times a Bot visits your site, the higher it will rank in search engines such as Google. Making your site more recognisable and accessible to Bots is one of the processes in Search Engine Optimisation.

Bounce rate

Bounce rate is the percentage of initial visitors who enter a site then leave it without viewing any other pages.

Brighton

The hip, lively city by the sea that is home to White Hat Media, one of the best web and search marketing agencies in the world! Situated roughly fifty miles from London between the South Downs and the English Channel it is at the cutting edge of everything that is happening in the digital UK today.

A year round tourist destination famed for its beach, piers and Royal Pavilion amongst other things, it’s the perfect place no matter what the age. The city centre is one that hasn’t been completely cloned and there are cafes and restaurants for all tastes.

Brin, Sergey

Sergey Brin is a co founder of Google and currently is the President of Technology at Google. With an estimated worth of $18.5 billion he ranks as the 26th richest person in the world.

Brin studied computer science at the University of Maryland and Stanford and is currently said to be on leave from his Ph.D. studies at Stanford. Google was started in the garage of a California suburb and it is now the world’s largest media organisation. He now appears regularly on television and has invested $5 million in Space Adventures as a means to a deposit for one of their proposed flights to space in 2011.

Broadmatch

This is a form of keyword matching where keywords in any selected order can match a search listing. It works as a default keyword matching service in Google Adwords. It will make sure that your ad will match a widespread group of keywords that are relevant.

Broadmatch can help if you hadn’t considered keywords that might be relevant to your product although you are somewhat reliant on Google’s algorithm to push you in the right direction.
