Deep Link
A deep link is a link that points to a page on another website that isn’t the home page. This is a practice that some internet industry people are opposed to as it by-passes a sites homepage where advertisers are more likely to be located.
It can be useful for sending people to the correct page without to much searching through a site’s many pages though. Often SEM campaigns are designed to send traffic direct to these pages. These pages can be reached by search engine spiders just as easily as the home pages can.
Directory
A web directory is a collection of links to other websites and sources that is constructed by a human editor and not a spider or bot, listing websites by category and sub category. Unlike search engines, directories list by a whole website and not just a page or keyword.
There can be general or specific directories depending on where and what you are looking for. An example can be the shopping directory where there will be a full list of retail e-commerce sites.
Dmoz
Also known as the Open Directory Project, is the largest open content directory of internet links contributed to and managed by a community of volunteer editors and web surfers. It’s one of the few directories recognised by Google.
Domain Name
This is your identification on the internet and it is tied to an Internet Protocol (IP) address. This can often be referred to as a signpost on the internet and would have featured in every email you’ve ever written. Once a domain name has been bought, it is exclusive to the buyer and no one else may use it as long as you keep up the annual renewal. A domain name will always contain two or more parts to it, always separated by a dot with the left part identifying the organisation and the right the highest sub domain such as the country. It can be identified by ending in .com, .co.uk or .net for example.
Doorway Page
This is a Black Hat technique of creating a page for the sole purpose of obtaining a high ranking in the search results for one or two terms. It is sometimes referred to as another form of Cloaking.
Drupal
Drupal is a free and open source content management system (CMS)and is used for a wide range of websites from small, personal blogs to much larger corporate sites. White Hat Media have built a wide range of Drupal sites, contact us now to talk to us about building your Drupal site.
Duplicate Content
Web content that is an exact duplicate or extremely similar to another page or website does not go down well with the search engines.
Dynamic Pages
These are the pages on your website that are created "on the fly" through the use of certain programming languages such as PHP or ASP. Each time you access a dynamic page it is possible that the content will have changed, for example if wanting to display information from a database. Examples of dynamic pages can be seen in banks or estate agents or Amazon, where all the information is stored in a database and you access it by logging in.
