The number of inbound links your website have is really important regarding to SEO nowadays. "Inbound links" or "backlinks" being websites linking to your site. The more inbound links you have, the better ranked you will be. But be careful though, inbound links are not everything and are surely not enough to achieve good position on search engines.
The obvious question when you start doing link building is, whether link exchange is good or bad?
Link exchange can be bad for your website and get you banned from Google only if you got too many irrelevant links. Automated link exchanges are not all bad, but you must pay attention. Also some are just useless because your link gets buried within the directory too far down the linking hierarchy that search engines just will not find your link.
If you use them, you have to be very selective. First, when choosing the automated link exchange service. Then, in the sites you exchange links with. Do not under any circumstance go for mega directories, but only sites related to your topic. Relevancy is the key basically.
Furthermore, the link page must be able to be reached from the partners home page, at least not more than 3 clicks away...
You should also take into consideration the link text and the surrounding content of the link. Actually you should be careful any time you submit your URL to a website and not only for link exchange! Do not use your domain name as your link text, it is a waste. Use only relevant keywords and make sure it is surrounded by relevant content.
All after all, link exchanging is a time consuming task, but can pay off after time, as well as link building in general!
